Burial/memorial information

Additional information

On January 15, 1942, the Wigry was on route from Hafnarfjordur, Reykjavik, Iceland, to New York when it experienced mechanical problems during a storm. She ran aground and some of the crew tried to survive by canoe and swimming. According to sources, 25 sailors died in the accident. Only two made it to shore. On September 9, 1961, the Polish government erected a memorial at the Fossvogs, Iceland, cemetery where the two sailors were buried.
