Son of Patrick A. Horan and Elizabeth Anne McGrath of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Brother of Private Cornelius Patrick Horan, U.S. Army regimental number 2489. There is no indication that he fought in the Second World War.

This Newfoundlander, a naturalised American citizen, was a lieutenant-commander in the American Merchant Marine, number Z-30381. He perished with the Coamo torpedoed on 2 December 1942 by U-604 150 miles (242 km) west of Ireland, position 48°45'N/23°30'W. The survivors boarded three lifeboats and were never seen again. The attack cost the lives of 133 merchant seamen, 37 armed US Navy guards and 16 British Army passengers.

He is also commemorated on page 156 of the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance.
