Son of Alexandeer Fleming Warnock and Mary Smith from Glasgow, Scotland. Husband of Ethel Turnel from Burnley, England. Father of Irene Fleming and Ian Douglas Warnock.

He served in the Royal Navy Reserve, regimental number EA-1828, and between the wars on board the RRS William Scoresby. He died of a fractured skull following a fall between the quay and the ship anchored at Quebec, Quebec.
