Awarded posthumously for actions during the World War I
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) Axel Rasmussen, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, A.E.F., at Rocquencourt, France, 4 May 1918. Major Rasmussen proceeded to his post of command in spite of heavy bombardment in order to save important papers and while thus engaged was killed by shell fire.
