Son of William Arthur and Mabel (née Thomas) Dutfield of Lulu Island, British Columbia. Husband of Helen Agnes (née Bellefontaine) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Brother of Miriam Dutfield. Leading Seaman Dutfield completed grade 12 in Richmond, British Columbia in 1941. He had previous service in the 72nd Seathforth Cadets. He enjoyed tennis, baseball, swimming and softball.

Leading Seaman DUTFIELD, Sub-Lieutenant JAMES FRANK WASHBROOK and Leading Seaman ERNEST VINCENT MARSHALL died when their Navy Grumman Avenger, flying out of CFB Shearwater, crashed off the coast of Nova Scotia on March 3, 1953.
