Husband of Ethel Gilbert of Colpoys Bay, Ontario. Father of Irene, Bessie,and three sons who all served in the Second World War. John who served with the Toronto Scottish, Elmer, better known as Monk, served with the Merchant Navy and later died as a Great Lakes Captain for Imperial Oil, and Ray who served in the Navy. Pte Gilbert served with the 160th Battalion until he was honourably discharged on 10 March 1918 in Guelph, Ontario, due to sickness contracted while on Active Service.
