Cst. Johnston was born in Ontario and was a farmer upon his engagement with the NWMP. He was shot and killed at Fort Walsh by the accidental discharge of a bullet from a Winchester rifle that was in the hands of a fellow member who was attempting to unload his rifle. The firing pin was faulty and discharged the round in the chamber. Cst. Johnston is buried at Fort Walsh.
