Sergeant Burkholder was born in Brampton, Ontario and raised in New Brunswick. He served in several detachments in Nova Scotia. Sergeant Burkholder was known to be honest and straightforward. He belonged to the Lions’ Club and worked for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Sergeant Burkholder loved to curl, play golf, and spend as much time as he could with his family.

He was married to Frances and had two daughters: Tammy and Tanya. This was the first murder of a Mountie in Nova Scotia. Sergeant Burkholder is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. There is an annual memorial golf tournament in his honour. The proceeds of this tournament go the Sergeant Derek C. Burkholder Memorial Trust which gives bursaries to graduating high school students.
