Son of Samuel B. and Maria Ryder, of Kelowna, British Columbia. His brother, Private Herbert Henry Ryder, served with the 54th Battalion, British Columbia, and died on April 9, 1917.

Private Samuel John Ryder served with the 13th Essex Regiment and he is also commemorated on page 569 of the First World War Book of Remembrance under the alias of Samuel John Adams.
