Son of Adélard Fortier and Mathilde David, of Montréal, Québec. He stated being born on the 21st when he enlisted.

Arrived in France on 29 June 1916, he was taken on strength in the 22nd Battalion. Wilfrid spent his first months at the base camps with a trench digging unit. On 19 September, after Courcelette had been captured by the 22nd, he joined the Battalion as reinforcement and on 1 October, he was involved in the assault at Regina trench. He was severely wounded by shrapnel in the arms and thighs and was evacuated to No. 49 Casualty Clearing Station in Contay but succumbed to his wounds a short time later.

Location:

Contay is a village in the Department of the Somme on the main road, Amiens to Arras. The CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY lies on the left (north east) side of the road to Franvillers. There are no access problems. There is a CWGC road sign next to the church and square of the village and next to the D23, Franvillers - Corbie, sign. The distance from the CWGC sign to the Cemetery is approximately 650 metres.
