Son of Samuel and Estelle M. Merrill, of Cambridge, Mass. U.S.A. He graduated in the Class of 1919, Havard College. He served under the name of Arthur Ashton STANLEY. There is a second commemorative record for him under that name on page 331 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.

Location:

The YPRES RESERVOIR CEMETERY is located to the North West of the town. From the station turn left and drive along M.Fochlaan to the roundabout, turn right and go to the next roundabout. Here turn left into M.Haiglaan along for 300 meters and turn right into M.Plumerlaan. The YPRES RESERVOIR CEMETERY is on the right hand side, approx 200 meters along.

  • Photo of Wainwright Merrill– Wainwright Merrill was the author of "A College Man in Khaki - Letters of an American in the British Artillery", published 1918 in New York. Too young to enlist and prior to American entry into the war, Wainwright Merrill signed up with the Canadians using the name "Arthur Stanley".  His book includes his original line drawings, photos, and correspondence. Merrill was killed in action November 6th, 1917.  The photograph shown in his book was taken in 1915.
