The Youth in Partnership with Veterans Memorial was dedicated on October 20, 2000. This piece of Manitoulin history was rebuilt as a Canadian Millennium Partnership project between the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 177, Little Current and Branch 514, Western Manitoulin and the students of Manitoulin area schools. The monument is an example of youth and Veterans working in harmony and with respect for each other.
After the unveiling of the monument, a ceremony of passing the torch from Veterans to student representatives from each school in the Manitoulin District was held. It signified that the youth will carry the Veteran’s torch, that the remembrance of their sacrifice will continue into the twenty first century and that for which they fought was not in vain.
The following Manitoulin schools participated in this historic millennium project.
- Assiginack Public School
- Central Manitoulin Public School
- Little Current Public School
- Shawanoswe School
- Pontiac School
- Charles C. McLean Public School
- Lakeview School
- Manitoulin Secondary School
- Sheshegwaning School
- Wasse-Abin High School
The Manitoulin District Cenotaph, Merchant Navy Memorial and Manitoulin Women's Memorial are also located in the Veterans' Memorial Gardens Complex.
