The Veterans' Memorial Gardens Complex is comprised of two one-acre parks on either side of the side-road. The land for these parks was donated by two local farmers, George White, a Veteran of the First and Second World Wars, and family and Robert (Bert) Hill's wife, Mary and family.
The Complex is made up of the Manitoulin District Cenotaph, Merchant Navy Memorial, Manitoulin Women's Memorial, and the Youth in Partnership with Veterans Memorial. The project was conceived and supervised by First World War Veteran, James (Jim) Wilson. It was unveiled and dedicated in September 1921. It was jointly sponsored by Campbell and Carnarvon townships, and funded by local residents.
Comrade Bert Hill donated another park across the side road. The Veterans' Memorial Gardens is now comprised of a picnic area, parking and a parade square. It represents two towns, seven First Nations and 22 townships. All of this happened in four and a half years of a scheduled six year project. It was backed by the generosity of 11,200 residents, many donors, unlimited publicity by two local newspapers, two determined and generous Legions and an irrepressible, long suffering, never-say-die committee of twelve Second World War Veterans.
