Douglas Wood was in Camp Borden when he saw the United Nations park with a stone dedicated to Canadian Peacekeepers and thought it would be a good addition to the Legion Riders Memorial Park. Douglas was a member of Legion Riders, which consist of United Nations Veterans, and was almost killed in his tour of duty with the United Nations in 1980. All Legion Riders had at least one United Nations tour and they have all lost friends during these tours.
In 2017, Douglas took it upon himself to dedicate and remember his friends that were lost in peacekeeping duties. The stone is rough and unfinished on the back and sides as were those who served. Its pink and gray granite with marble running through the middle symbolizes a broken heart. A large maple leaf represents Canada. The United Nation logo represents friends that were lost. A Canadian flag depicts the country they love and served when called upon. The four points of the compass represent all the places in the world they would travel if called upon. The monument is a dedication to all who served - past, present and future.
