Enlisted in the 69th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Liverpool, England, on 27 April 1916. On 28 July he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and on the 29th he crossed into France and went to the front line on 20 September. He was reported missing in action on 4 October 1916 during the Battle of Courcelette, France, for the capture of Regina Trench in St-Léger. His body must have been found, as there is a grave in his name in the Courcelette cemetery.
