Sergeant Chafe was a well-known international motorist, and was related to Captain Bob Bartlett, the Newfoundland explorer, who accompanied Peary on his journey to the North Pole.

He studied at Bishop Field College, following by a period in England where he studied theology at Canterbury. Becoming interested in motoring he gave up his studies and devoted all his time to this pursuit. He won two international motor races on the continent.
