Named Joseph Jules Aimé Célestin Hermary, he served under the name Célestin Hermary.

Son of Henri Joseph Hermary and Constance Adélaïde Queste, from Saint-Floris, Pas-de-Calais, France. Husband of Gabrielle Mathilde Tassez, of 414, rue Langevin, Saint-Boniface, (today Winnipeg), Manitoba. Father of Julien, Julienne, Henriette, Jeanne, Marie and Suzanne Hermary.

Brother of Private Gabriel Raphael Hermary, service number 3208514, Alberta Regiment. He fought in France with the Canadian Labor Batallion. He survived the war.

Enlisted in the 233rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was transferred to the 178th Battalion on March 1, 1917. He sailed for Great Britain on the 4th and arrived on the 15th. Upon his arrival, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion. From April 30 to May 30, 1917, he was seconded to the 5th Reserve Battery at Shorncliffe. On September 6, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and crossed over to France on the 7th. He rejoined his unit on the 26th and went to the front lines on November 24. He was killed in action on April 2, 1918, by a shell explosion in the trenches at Mercatel, southwest of Neuville-Vitasse and about 60 km from his hometown.

Wailly is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais about 6 kilometres south-west from Arras in the valley of the little river Crinchon. WAILLY ORCHARD CEMETERY stands above the village on its outskirts in part of the old orchard.
