Passage from the Regimental History of the 48th Highlanders 1891 to 1929 describing the actions of the 15th Battalion C.E.F (48th Highlanders of Canada) at the battle of Hill 70 near Lens in August 1915. During the course of the battle the 15th Bn captured the key German strongpoint at Bois Hugo which was followed by a series of determined German counterattacks trying to recover the position. During these attacks a small formation of Germans penetrated the Canadian lines as far as the HQ of the 15th Bn. The passage describes LCpl Green's heroic actions and death while repelling the German attack.

"The Hill 70 memorial, erected by the 15th Battalion Memorial Project and the town of Benifontaine, was unveiled and dedicated on 22 September 2012. The memorial commemorates the actions of the 15th Battalion CEF, which was on the extreme left flank of the Canadian assault on Hill 70, on 15 August 1917 and the memory of those members of the Battalion who fell during the engagement. The memorial sits on what was then known as Bois Hugo, which the Battalion assaulted, captured and held against repeated German counterattacks."

Bethune is located 29 kilometres north of Arras.
The BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY is on the northern outskirts of Bethune near the junction of the River Lawe and the Aire la Bassee Canal. From the town centre turn right in front of the Tribunal and second right at the bottom of the road down to the cul de sac.
