Baptized Joseph-Benoit-Berthiol Guay. Son of Arthur Guay and Herméline Tremblay (deceased in 1898), of St-Placide.
His father remarried to Marie-Louise Gaudreault in 1899 and they successively resided in Île-d’Anticosti and St-Grégoire-de-Montmorency, Québec. He stated being born in Baie-St-Paul when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 57th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on June 2, 1916, and arrived in Liverpool, England, on the 8th. Upon his arrival, he was assigned to the 69th Battalion.
On October 27, he crossed over to France, and on November 3, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. From November 21, 1916, to March 3, 1917, he was seconded to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion.
On April 30, 1918, he was mortally wounded in action by shrapnel in the trenches northeast of Neuville-Vitasse, Pas-de-Calais. He was transported to the 6th Canadian Field Ambulance and, on the same day, to the 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital in Doullens, Somme, where he died that same day.

Doullens is a town in the Department of the Somme, approximately 30 kilometres north of Amiens on the N25 road to Arras.
The DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY and EXTENSIONS lie on the eastern side f the town, about 270 metres south-east of the road to Arras.
