François stated being born on 31 May 1896 when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 69th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Liverpool, England, on 27 April 1916. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 28 June, he landed in France the same day and went to the front line on 13 July. He was initially presumed killed in action between 30 September and 4 October 1916, and on 13 November he was confirmed killed in action on 2 October 1916 during the Battle of Courcelette for the capture of Regina Trench.
His first name is spelled “Francis” on page 71 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
