He was a member of the class of 1914 at the Royal Military College of Canada Cadet number 932. He served with the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). He died on May 9, 1915. His name is listed on the memorial arch at the Royal Military College of Canada.

932 Lieutenant Richard Gilpin Crawford (RMC 1913) was the son of William C. Gawford, a merchant and Annie Gilpin Gawford, of Chatham, Ontario. He studied at Upper Canada College and the Royal Military College of Canada. He enlisted in August 17, 1914. He served as a Lt with the Essex Fusiliers. He served with the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment). He served in France during the Great War. He was Mentioned in Despatches (Nov 20 1915) by Field Marshall Sir John French for gallant and distinguished service in the field. He was wounded on May 8th, 1915 at the battle of Belle Waarde Lake and died of wounds on May 9th 1919 at No. 2 Sta Hospital. He died on May 9, 1915 at 23 years of age. He was buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery in Nord, France. He is commemorated on the Memorial Tablet at Upper Canada College, the Memorial Arch at the Royal Military College of Canada, and on Page 10 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.

BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY Nord, France
Bailleul is a large town in France, near the Belgian border, 14.5 kilometres south-west of Ieper and on the main road from St. Omer to Lille. The BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY is on the eastern outskirts of the town.
From the Grand place, take the Ieper road and 400 metres along this road is a sign indicating the direction of the cemetery. Turn down the right into a small road and follow for approximately 400 metres, the BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY is on the right.
