He was the second son of David and Jane Holmes, Hugomont Villas, Ballymena and brother of David.. He is buried Orchard Dump Cemetery, Vimy Ridge. He is commemorated on the family headstone in Ballymena New Cemetery, Cushendall Road, Ballymena. Submitted for the project, Operation: Picture Me.

Orchard Dump Cemetery is in the village of Arleux-en-Gohelle, on the main road (D919) from Arras to Henin-Lietard. The cemetery lies on the left side of this road approximately 1 kilometre from the village of Bailleul-Sire-Berthoult.
