Baptized Hilaire Dussiaume, illiterate and he also served under the names Dussiaume and Jussiaume. Son of Joseph Jussiaume and Rosalie Sommier-dit-Lajeunesse.

He is commemorated on page 398 of the First World War Book of Remembrance as “Dissiaume, Illaire”.

Enlisted in the 163rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 26, 1916, he sailed for Bermuda, where he remained until November 18. He set sail again on the 18th, stopped in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 26th, departed for Great Britain on the 27th, and arrived in Liverpool, England, on December 6, 1916. On January 7, 1917, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion in Shoreham, then to the 150th Battalion on March 1. On February 27, 1918, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. On the 28th, he crossed over to France. He went to the front lines for the last time on April 12, 1918. He was initially reported as wounded in action but later declared killed on August 10, 1918, during the Battle of Amiens on the Somme, in the course of an assault from Caix toward the east of Méharicourt.

CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY Somme, France

The village of Caix is situated about 28 kilometres south-east of Amiens, midway between the N29, Amiens to St. Quentin road, and the D934, Amiens to Roye road. The CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY is south of the village.

From the centre of the village on the main road, D28, in the direction of Beaucourt en Santerre, turn left at the D41 in the direction of Le Quesnel. About 200 metres along this road is the local communal cemetery and the first CWGC signpost will be found. Turn left just before the local cemetery and follow the side road where the CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY will be found on the right.
