Son of George Gray and Ellen Stephen, of Cairnie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Husband of Anna Sarah Walpole, of Wiarton, Bruce, Ontario, and Oxenden, Grey, Ontario.

Charles was deployed by mistake to the 22nd Battalion when he left England for the front. As he was unable to serve in a Francophone unit, he was transferred to the 24th Battalion one month later.

In the trenches of Saint-Éloi, Belgium, on 26 April 1916, he was severely wounded and died of his wounds three days later at No. 10 Casualty clearing station in “Remy Siding”, near Poperinghe.
