Baptized Joseph Georges Gravel. Son of Napoléon Gravel and Rose-de-Lima « Délima » Labrosse, of Glen Robertson, Glengarry, Ontario.

He stated being born in Montréal on May 16, 1895 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 163rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 26, 1916, he sailed for Bermuda, where he arrived on the 29th. On November 18, he departed for Halifax, Nova Scotia, arriving on the 26th. He left again on the 27th for Great Britain and landed in Liverpool, England, on December 6. On January 7, 1917, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion. From February 26 to March 16, 1917, he was assigned to the 150th Battalion before returning to the 10th Battalion. On March 28, 1918, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, and on the 29th, he crossed into France with Company D. On April 20, he went to the front lines. He took part in the Battles of Liévin-Lens, Neuville-Vitasse, and Amiens. On August 28, 1918, he was killed in action during the Battle of Chérisy, Pas-de-Calais.

Take the D38 from Cherisy to Hendecourt. Approximately 2 kilometres from Cherisy turn left just before Sun Quarry Cemetery onto a dirt track. Continue for 1 kilometre before turning left to arrive at Quebec Cemetery.
