Baptized Hormidas Haynes. Son of John Haynes and Louise Rhéaume of Montréal, Québec. Husband of Florida Plessis (Bélair) of Montréal, Québec.
The spelling of Hormisdas’ last name varied in his military documents (Haynes, Hayeins, Hayens).
Enlisted in the 150th Battalion, 4th Company, of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was transferred to the 178th Battalion on February 16, 1917. He sailed for Great Britain on March 3 and arrived in England on the 15th. Upon his arrival, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion. On August 25, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and crossed over to France on the 27th. On the 30th, he went to the front lines. He was killed instantly in action by machine-gun fire on August 28, 1918, during an assault from Wancourt toward Chérisy in the Battle of Chérisy, Pas-de-Calais.
