Baptized Joseph-Jean-Baptiste-Élisée-Herman Laplante. Son of Élisée Laplante and Mathilda Braconnier, of Montréal, Québec. He had declared to be born on March 5th, 1880 at the time of his enrollment and although baptized "Herman", he was always called "Armand" and is registered as such in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses.
He enlisted for the first time on February 24, 1915, in Montreal, Quebec, with the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, service number 410426, stating that he was born in 1881. He was scheduled to embark for Great Britain on October 18. He did not report for duty. On January 4, 1916, he enlisted again in the 163rd Battalion, service number 660078, claiming to have been born in 1880. On May 26, 1916, he left for Bermuda, where he served until November 18. He set sail again, stopped in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 26th, and departed for Great Britain on the 27th, arriving on December 6 in Liverpool, England. On January 7, 1917, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion, and then, on March 28, 1918, to the 20th Reserve Battalion. On April 8, 1918, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. He crossed the English Channel on the 9th and landed in France on the 10th. He took part in the fighting at Neuville-Vitasse, Pas-de-Calais. From June 20 to 30, he was under medical care for an illness of unknown origin. He returned to his battalion on August 6 and was killed in action on August 28, 1918, during the Battle of Chérisy, Pas-de-Calais.
