Private William M. Menary was born and raised in Galt, Ontario, the son of Mr. William Menary, 105 Victoria Avenue, Galt. Private Menary went overseas with a special service corps of the 34th Battalion. He died at the Somme on 18 September 1916 from wounds inflicted. Menary was survived by a wife and two daughters. Pte. William M. Menary, 34th Batt. [Symbol of cross] Somme (died of wounds), Sept. 18, 1916.

William Munn Menary, seated at right, holds his son "Bud" as he poses with his father, William James Menary (standing rear) and his grandfather, Isaac Menary, who was nearly 100 when this photo was taken outside the family home on 105 Victoria Avenue in Galt, ON. Isaac, born May 7, 1817 in Belmafed, Tyrone, Ireland, would outlive his grandson, dying July 28, 1921 in Peel County. William had a young daughter, Esther, in addition to Bud. At the time of this photo, William and his wife Emma and their two young children lived across the street in a small one-storey house at 104 Victoria Avenue. It is of note that William's father, William James, at the age of 50, enlisted in the Canadian army shortly afterward, one of the oldest enlistees in the Dominion, explaining that "Any army good enough for my son is good enough for me."

ALBERT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Somme, France
Albert is a town on the River Ancre in the Department of the Somme, 28 kilometres north-east of Amiens. The ALBERT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION is on the south-east side of Albert and the junction of the roads to Fricourt and Meaulte, and the Extension is entirely enclosed by it.
