Lance Sergeant Samuel James Caulfield was born in Ballymena, Ireland. He enlisted in Toronto on January 24th, 1916. He indicated on his military attestation that he had six years experience with the Royal Canadian Regiment. He was a member of the Toronto police force prior to the war.

NOEUX-LES-MINES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. Pas de Calais, France
Noeux-les-Mines is a town 6 kilometres south of Bethune on the main road to Arras. The Communal Cemetery is on the northern side of the town on the south-east of the road to Labourse. The NOEUX-LES-MINES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION is on the west side of the Communal Cemetery.
