Baptized Joseph-Zéphir-Bélonie Goyette. Son of Bélonie Goyette and Agnès Mailloux, of Nicolet and Iberville, Québec. He signed « Benonnie » when he enlisted. Born in Quebec, he lived more than ten years in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Enlisted in the 178th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was transferred to the 150th Battalion, Mont-Royal Carabiniers, on September 20, 1916. With this unit, he sailed for Great Britain on September 14, 1916. The ship set sail on the 27th and docked in Liverpool, England, on October 6. On December 5, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, and the next day, he crossed the English Channel, landing in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, that same day.
On 28 August in Chérisy, he was mortally wounded when hit by a bullet and he died two days later at No. 33 Casualty clearing station, located in Ligny-Saint-Flochel.
