Baptized Joseph Henri Girard. Son of Élie Girard and Sophie Simard (deceased in 1913), of Roberval, Lac-St-Jean, Québec. Husband of Adèle Bernier, of Roberval, Montréal and St-Hyacinthe, Québec. Father of Marie Anne, Marie Reine Clérinda, Joseph Alfred Adélard, Joseph Jean Baptiste François Albert Girard.
He stated being born in Lac St-Jean in 1882 when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 69th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on April 17, 1916, and landed in Liverpool, England, on the 27th. On June 28, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, and on the 29th, he landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France. From October 22 to November 22, 1916, he was loaned to the 5th Canadian Machine Gun Company. Upon returning to his unit, he went to the front and was killed in action on December 25, 1916, at around 1 a.m., in the trenches of Mecknes in Aix-Noulette, Pas-de-Calais, by a German artillery shell.
