Additional information

Baptized Joseph-Alfred Grondin. Son of Napoléon Grondin and Marie Richard, of St-Maurice-de-Champlain, Mauricie, Québec. He stated being born on 9 September 1899 when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 57th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he served under the name Jos Grondin. He sailed for Great Britain on June 2, 1916, and arrived in Liverpool, England, on the 8th. Upon his arrival, he was assigned to the 69th Reserve Battalion in Otterpool. On August 27, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and sent to France, arriving on the 28th in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais. From September 18 to 20, he was seconded to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion. He was killed in action on April 28, 1917, when a German shell struck his trench during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in the Souchez and Scarpe rivers sector. He was Captain Leblanc’s orderly.

Thelus is a village 7 kilometres north of Arras and BOIS-CARRE BRITISH CEMETERY is about half a mile east of the village on the south side of the D49 road to Bailleul-sire-Berthoult.
