His real name was John McBroom, although he served under the name John Allan. He was the son of William McBroom and Frances Allan McBroom of Kilwinning, Scotland. Prior to his service in the First World War, he served in the South African Campaign with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
