Baptized Joseph-Alphonse-Herménégilde Blais. Son of Anselme Blais and Mathilde Couture (deceased in 1892), of Lévis, Québec. He stated being born on 15 July 1892 when he enlisted.

Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 27 August 1916 from the 69th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he joined his new unit on 20 September to take part in the Battle of Courcelette, Pas-de-Calais, France, where he was first reported missing and then presumed dead in action on 4 October 1916.
