Son of William Alexander Clegg and Louisa Shelley Clegg of Hamilton, Ontario. On his attestation paper, he listed himself as single and was a cabinet maker. Brother of William George, Louis Edmond, Elsie Henderson, Albert Henry, Alice Maude, Mabel, Eva Wilson and Madge Powell. Louis Edmond and Albert Henry also served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

His name as it is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial. Over 11,000 fallen Canadians having no known place of burial in France, are honoured on this Memorial. May they never be forgotten. (J. Stephens)
