Burial/memorial information
Son of Damase Gagné (deceased in 1915) and Henriette Desmeules, of Hull, Québec. Husband of Albertine « Berthine » Damphousse, of Hull, Québec. He was father of two.
Enlisted in the 59th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force under the name Peter Gagne, he sailed for Great Britain on April 1, 1916, arriving in Plymouth, England, on the 11th. He was assigned to the 20th Battalion on June 6, 1916, and left for France. He landed there on the 8th and on the 10th, he went to the front line. Suffering from myalgia, he was treated from June 23 to August 18. On August 19, 1916, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion and joined his new unit on the 20th. On September 18, 1916, he was reported missing during fighting in Courcelette, Pas-de-Calais. He was then presumed killed in action, and on October 3, 1917, his death was confirmed.
His baptism record could not be found, and his first name is listed as “Arcidas” in the 1891 census, “Archilas” in the 1911 census and “Philias” on his wedding record in 1912. He enlisted as “Peter” and this was later changed to read “Philias”.
