This photo of Private John Meaney was taken in Belfast in 1912 shortly before emmigration to Canada.<P> He was born in Ireland in 1886 and joined the Army at a young age. He was part of the Inniskilling Dragoons that fought in the Boer War and spent about 7 years in the army before going to Canada.<P> It was his intention to acquire some land in British Columbia but decided to join the Canadian Mounted Rifles. It is assumed that he wished to put his previous calvary experience to some good but he died on September 16, 1916. -

This photograph was taken in 1916 in France and was sent as a postcard by John Meaney to his sister Mary living in Ireland. -
Inscription
His name as it is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial (2010). Over 11,000 fallen Canadians having no known place of burial in France, are honoured on this Memorial. May they never be forgotten. (J. Stephens) -
