Photo of William Mew
My Gt Uncle, William Mew, born in Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was my gran's favourite brother and she named her son, my uncle, after him. He emigrated to Canada, to farm. He enlisted in Moose Jaw and joined 28th Bn, Saskatchewan Rgt. He was killed in the Battle of Mount Sorrel, Hill 62, Hooge, near Ypres. I laid a wreath for him at the Menin Gate after the ceremony for the 90th anniversary of its' unveiling, on 24th July, 2017. I also visited the battle site, which is now a beautiful place, to see where, somewhere, he is, and to walk a little in his footsteps. -
Memorial
William Mew's name on the Menin Gate, with the wreath I laid in his memory, acknowledging his Canadian home, though an English man by birth. This was on 24th July 2017, after the ceremony for the 90th anniversary of the unveiling of the Menin Gate, which was a wonderful event. I then went back for the Last Post at 8pm. If you ever get the chance to go to that, please do - and be there early, it is always crowded!
