On 29 June 1942, at 5:55 am, the Ruth was torpedoed by U-153 100 miles (160 km) north of Cape Maysi Cuba. The ship was destroyed by a huge explosion and sank by the stern in less than two minutes, so quickly that the 7 officers, 27 crew and 4 gunners did not have time to get the lifeboats into the sea, position 21°40'N/59°20'W. The 4 survivors were interrogated by the Germans and abandoned. They were rescued on 4 July by the American destroyer USS Corry (DD-463) and landed at Port of Spain, Trinidad, on 7 July.
