On 11 July 1942, convoy OS-33 was dispersed due to the presence of German submarines. On the 12th, at 1:47 am, the Port Hunter was torpedoed 370 miles (596 km) west-south-west of Madeira and sank in two minutes after very violent explosions that heavily damaged the submersible on the surface, in position 31°15'N/23°50'W. The captain, 68 crew members, 14 gunners and 5 passengers lost their lives. Three sailors were rescued by the British frigate HMS Rother (K224) at around 8:30 am.
