Son of Alexander Fraser and Marjorie K., of Nova Scotia. Husband of Jane Hasalman, of Sunderland, England. Father of William Stanley, Wilfred Ernest, James William and Mildred Maitland Fraser.

On 17 November 1917, the Abaris was on ballast en route from Calais, France, to Manchester, England, when she was damaged by a torpedo launched from UB-40 10 miles (16 km) west of Eddystone lighthouse, in the English Channel, and 9 miles (14.5 km) south-west of Rame Head, in southern England. The attack cost the lives of three sailors.
