Son of William and Mary Walsh, of 13, Howe Place, St. John's, Newfoundland.

On 6 March 1917, the Fenay Lodge was en route from Mobile, Alabama, to Cherbourg, France, when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-44 250 miles (402 km) west-north-west of Fastnet Rock, south-east of Ireland, position 51°42'N/16°11'W. Four sailors, including the captain, lost their lives and two survived.
