Son of Henry Winkworth and Harriett Smith of 25, Air Balloon Hill, St. George, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.

Brother of Seaman Joseph Winkworth, regimental number K-6741, who served in the Royal Navy from 26 May 1910 to 25 May 1922, also during the First World War, and Private Morley Winkworth, regimental number 6969, of 20/22nd Reinforcement, Australian Imperial Force, 1917-1919, also during the First World War.

Requisitioned by the British Admiralty, SS Royal Edward became HMT Royal Edward and was converted into a troop transport. While en route to Gallipoli, Turkey, with about 1,335 British troops, she was torpedoed by UB-14 6 miles (9.5 km) west of the Aegean Island of Kandeloussa and sank with 866 men, position 36°31'N/25°51'E.
