Son of William Winlo Atkinson and Ann Laidman. Husband of Ida Olive Black.

On March 11, 1917, the Kwasind, a Canadian steamship, struck a mine laid by the German submarine UC-4 off Southwold, in the North Sea, and sank with twelve sailors, position 52°08'N/01 °45'E.
