Son of Thomas and Fanny Smith from Loughton, Essex, England. Husband of Ethel Cottrell of 51, Thompson Street, Sundeland, Durham, England.

On 16 September 1918, she was sailing unescorted from Bilbao, Spain, to Ayr, Scotland, when she was torpedoed without warning at 22:25 by UB-117 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Trevose Head, England, in North Atlantic, position 50°25'N/05°16'W. Of her crew, 25 seafarers, including the captain, lost their lives. The sole survivor was rescued, position 50°25'10''N/05°15'59''W.
