Son of Joseph Henry Smith and Elizabeth Rosina Clark from Deptford, London, England, Husband of Jane Elizabeth Russell of 15, Wilson Street, Deptford. Brother of Private William George Smith who served with the Buffs (East Kent) Regiment, British Army, regimental number 10692. He fought in France in the First World War and survived.
This steam and sail cargo ship was torpedoed by UC-77 on 15 April 1918 in the English Channel 9 miles (14.5 km) northwest of Portland Bill, England. A total of 55 people lost their lives.
