Son of Captain David Cromarty Thompson and Mary Ann Kelly of 5, Balfour Avenue, Bootle, Lancashire, England. Brother of Private Sidney Arnold Thompson, regimental number 2302, of the 1st/7th Battalion (The King's - Liverpool Regiment) British Army, killed in action on 15 May 1915 in France during the First World War.
The Missanabie was en route from Liverpool, England, to Quebec City and Montreal, Quebec, when on 9 September 1918 she was torpedoed by UB-87 52 miles (84 km) off Daunt's Rock, Cork, Ireland. She sank with 45 of her crew, position 58°11'N/07°25'W.
