Burial/memorial information
Son of John William, a Second World War veteran of Mount Hanley, Nova Scotia and Beatrice Murphy of Niagara Falls, Ontario. Brother of Neil. Gunner Murphy was a tall, lean blond youngster. He was quiet but a good talker once he got started. In school, his best subject was science and although he rather liked school, he quit at 16 to go to work. He worked for two years as a farm hand then changed employment and became a lumberman. There was not much to do in Mount Hanley, so he took up his spare time skating, swimming and hunting. He chose Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as his corps and desired to be trained as a Coast Artilley Gunner. Gunner Murphy is commemorated on the Nova Scotia Korea War Memorial with his fellow Nova Scotians who lost their lives in the Korean War. The Memorial is located at Pleasant and Parade Streets in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. It was unveiled and dedicated in a ceremony on 16 August 2003.
Commemorated on the Wall of Remembrance.
