Pte. G. Clelland Caldwell was born in Aurora, Ontario, on November 26th, 1894. He listed his occupation on his military attestation as a clerk. His name appears on the T. Eatons Company war memorial, now part of the collection of the National War Museum, but originally displayed at the Toronto Eatons store. He enlisted on July 24th, 1915 at Barriefield, a military training camp. This attestation was later stamped for the Orderly Room 8th Canadian Mounted Rifles, on September 10th, 1915.
