Additional information

Baptized Joseph-Marie-Georges Gagnon. Son of Joseph Gagnon (deceased in 1890) and Adèle Morin (deceased in 1903), of Sherbrooke, Québec. He named his older brother Joseph, of Sherbrooke, as next of kin when he enlisted.

Enlisted in the 57th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force under the name George, he sailed for Great Britain on June 2, 1916, and landed in Liverpool, England, on the 8th. Upon arrival, he was assigned to the 69th Reserve Battalion based in Otterpool. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on August 27, he crossed into France on the 29th with the 69th Reserve Battalion. From September 18 to 20, he was loaned to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion. Returning to his unit on the 22nd, he went to the front line in the Courcelette sector of Pas-de-Calais. He was reported missing between September 30 and October 4, 1916. After investigation, it was ruled that he had been killed in action on October 2, 1916, during the capture of Regina Trench.
